Chelsea vs Huddersfield Town

Chelsea put themselves back in contention for a top-four Premier League finish in 2017-18 by beating Liverpool 1-0 at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

A run of four top-flight wins in a row paired with Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur’s drop in domestic form has given the Blues a genuine chance of qualifying for next season’s UEFA Champions League.

They are still on the back foot in the race for the top four, though, and must win their final two games of the season to give themselves the best chance of leapfrogging Liverpool or Spurs.

Chelsea’s penultimate clash of the campaign comes against Huddersfield Town on Wednesday at Stamford Bridge.

The Terriers will be no pushovers, not least as they have yet to guarantee safety from relegation.

They did, though, earn a creditable point at Manchester City on Sunday, holding the champions to a 0-0 draw at the Etihad Stadium.

If David Wagner’s side are resolute enough to keep out Pep Guardiola’s free-scoring City on their own patch, they should also be capable of frustrating Antonio Conte’s Blues.

However, the reverse fixture between the two sides at the John Smith’s Stadium in December ended 3-1 to Chelsea, so the hosts will be confident of earning all three points again on Wednesday.

Crucial to the Blues’ upturn in results of late has been the form of Olivier Giroud.

He came off the bench and scored twice in Chelsea’s 3-2 comeback win against Southampton on April 14 and netted the only goal to down Liverpool on Sunday.

Alvaro Morata looks set to be fit for the visit of Huddersfield, per injury analyst Ben Dinnery:

However, it seems unlikely the Spaniard will be handed a start by Conte as Giroud has led the line effectively recently.

Per Opta, his aerial prowess is second to none, and Huddersfield will need to be organised to keep him quiet:

Chelsea are going to have to rely on Spurs and Liverpool slipping up again if they are to secure a top-four finish this season.

All they can do, though, is make sure they earn six points from their final two games, and given their recent fine form only a brave punter would bet against them downing Huddersfield in west London.

Golovkin vs Martirosyan

Golovkin vs Martirosyan Live Stream Online,On this Cinco de Mayo Saturday, undefeated middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin will be stepping into the ring, however, it just won’t be against the marquee opponent that everyone was expecting. Following the performance-enhancing drama that led to Canelo Alvarez’s removal from a much-anticipated rematch, GGG (37-0-1, 33 KOs) will now be facing off with Vanes Martirosyan.

Golovkin vs Martirosyan

Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) managed to secure a somewhat formidable foe to keep his date and attempt at tying Bernard Hopkin’s middleweight title defense record when he signed off on a bout with Vanes Martirosyan (36-3-1, 21 KOs) just over a month ago.

Adding in their combined craft and penchant to come forward, however — not to mention the mecca for action fights that is the StubHub Center as the backdrop — Golovkin’s pursuit of a new record has the potential to be entertaining theater for the Carson, California, crowd (HBO, 11 p.m. ET).

The knocks against Martirosyan, 32, are certainly clear and present: A career junior middleweight, the native Armenian hasn’t fought in two years. He also hasn’t won a fight since taking a majority decision from Ishe Smith in 2015.

But the 2004 U.S. Olympian has also been in an almost perpetual training camp over that time after three straight fights fell apart. Martirosyan is also a large junior middleweight who may end up being the bigger fighter come fight night against “Triple G,” who is considered a small middleweight.

“[Martirosyan] is a good fighter, I remember him in 2004 [Olympics] in a couple of fights and he was good,” said Golovkin, who won a silver medal for Kazakhstan. “He has a very strong chin and he is a little taller and has a longer reach. He has a lot of good experience. He has fought a lot of good boxers. I know my style and it matches up good with his but my style is much more interesting.”

True to Golovkin’s words, Martirosyan has also built a reputation of daring to be great and taking on difficult challenges — including Erislandy Lara (twice), Demetrius Andrade and Jermell Charlo — that others weren’t necessarily lining up for. Because of that, “The Nightmare” will be anything but intimidated in the face of Glolovkin’s powerful reputation, which included 23 straight knockouts from 2008-16.

“Most of GGG’s opponents — when they got into the ring they already lost,” Martirosyan said during Monday’s media teleconference. “They already thought about the power before they got in the ring and they fought defensive. Gennady is a monster and he hits really hard. So they got in the ring scared and I don’t get in the ring scared. I am going to do my thing.

“I just want to see where I belong in the sport. I never had the opportunity to show.”

The reason for Golovkin’s single-minded insistence that a fight of some kind take place on May 5 seemed to have more to do with his age and the want to avoid long layoffs than anything else.

“He just turned 36 on April 8 and we may not have him for that many more years so let’s enjoy as many fights as we can for as long as we can,” Golovkin trainer Abel Sanchez said.

Golovkin competed just twice in 2017 thanks to how long negotiations for fights against Danny Jacobs and Alvarez played out. Had he punted on Saturday’s date and waited out Alvarez’s six-month Nevada Athletic Commission suspension ahead of a September rematch, it would’ve created a one-year gap of inactivity.

Tom Loeffler, GGG’s promoter, revealed there were at least four occasions when he thought the fight date couldn’t be saved — including potential opponents either turning down big money (Gary “Spike” O’Sullivan) or getting rejected by the Nevada commission, where the Alvarez rematch was originally set to take place.

“If it were up to Gennady, he would fight three or four times a year,” Loeffler said. “He knows one punch can change a career and you don’t know, so fight as much as possible. He is the most entertaining boxer today and he trains to put on a good show, even if that means taking some punches to throw more back.”

If you take Golovkin at his word, his pursuit of equaling Bernard Hopkins’ division record for title defenses didn’t appear to mean all that much to him Monday when he said, “It is numbers, only numbers.” But the typically mild-mannered GGG, who has undergone a bit of a heel turn of late in how outspoken he has been against Alvarez for testing dirty, gave a surprising answer about how it would feel to stand alongside Hopkins in the history books.

“It will mean a lot but compared to Bernard Hopkins, my record is much bigger — stronger and bigger,” Golovkin said. “This is a good situation for me and for my fans and that’s it.”

Loeffler jumped in to quickly reiterate Golovkin’s mission statement — regardless of title defense record or not, big name opponent or late replacement — remains on doing one thing.

“I think [the middleweight record] is bigger for everyone on the team, like Abel Sanchez and myself,” Loeffler said. “We understand the historic perspective of what Gennady has accomplished in his career and could potentially accomplish on Saturday and be successful in another title defense. He just wanted to fight. He told me he didn’t care who and he didn’t care where just, ‘I want to fight on Cinco de Mayo,’ and that was my job.”

While Hopkins has yet to form a public rebuttal to Golovkin’s comments, Sanchez believes his fighter gets the nod historically as a middleweight due to his variety of opposition.

“If you look at [Golovkin’s] record, he hasn’t had any rematches in there,” Sanchez said. “Everybody he fought has been a new opponent. The great Bernard Hopkins fought twice against [Antwun] Echols and three times against Robert Allen. We are fighting new guys every time. By tying it, and if he decides to stay at middleweight and break the record in the future, is great for boxing history and good for historians to look back upon.”

Kentucky Derby 2018

The bad weather that was threatening to interfere with the Kentucky Oaks disappeared before post time and despite an objection from the second-place finisher’s camp, jockey Florent Geroux guided Monomoy Girl to victory.

Legendary jockey Mike Smith couldn’t cash in a winner’s ticket with Midnight Bisou, as a hard outside charge down the stretch petered out for a third-place finish behind Wonder Gadot.

And with that, the focus now turns to the 144th running of the Kentucky Derby set for 6:46 p.m. Saturday at Churchill Downs.

If the weather holds as expected, the balmy temperatures that created a drier track should lead to a faster-paced Run For The Roses. And with a field that is regarded by experts as the deepest, most talented field in the past decade, finding the definitive betting favorite is trickier than ever.

Justify, behind trainer Bob Baffert and jockey Smith, was installed as the favorite as post positions were announced. But to go there, you have to buy that a 136-year streak will be broken.  A three-year-old that never raced as a two-year-old hasn’t won the Derby since Apollo in 1882, but Justify and fellow early favorite Magnum Moon both fit that bill to break the so-called Apollo’s Curse.

I often look to the expert panel assembled at Hello Face Fans as the bellwether for how much to pay attention to the hype and the odds. But with the Kentucky Oaks, just two of the 25 experts pegged Monomoy Girl as the winner.

So let’s look to the betting facts that have played out this week.

Justify is now the co-favorite with Mendelssohn, a United Arab Emirates horse that started as a 5-1 bet but rose to 7/2 by Saturday. Concern over an early-week quarantine were erased as the horse looked strong in late-week workouts.

My Boy Jack, behind trainer Keith Desormeaux and jockey Kent Desormeaux, made the biggest odds jump over the course of the week, going from a 30-1 start to 18-1 by Saturday morning.

Another Baffert entry, Solomini, jumped from 30-1 to 22-1 and Hofburg has climbed from 20-1 to 15-1. And expect the casual fan to bet up Noble Indy from 30-1 after jockey Geroux’s win in the Oaks.

Rising odds stock: Audible, Good Magic, Hofburg, My Boy Jack, Enticed, Mendelssohn, Solomini

Falling odds stock: Firenze Fire, Free Drop Billy, Promises Fulfilled, Flameaway, Justify (miminal), Bolt D’Orso (minimal), Bravazo, Instilled Regard, Magnum Moon (minimal), Combatant

Flat stock (no change): Lone Sailor, Vino Rosso, Noble Indy

PAYOUTS TRENDS

After five straight years of double-digit payouts for the winner from 2009 to 2013, it’s now been four straight years of lower payouts on the winner. But that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily bad action. In fact, with two longshots in Lookin at Lee (33-1) and Battle of Midway (40-1) running 2-3 in 2017, the trifecta was the best payoff since $2009 and the superfecta (picking the top four finishers) paid out a whopping $75,974.50.

When is the Kentucky Derby?

Every year, the “Run for the Roses” is held on the first Saturday of May. And that day this year is Saturday, May 5. On Friday, the annual running of the Kentucky Oaks, a race for 3-year-old fillies (female horses), took place.

What’s the prize?

There will be 20 horses in this year’s race, with $2 million as the prize.

What time does the race start?

The post time for this year’s race is scheduled for 6:34 p.m. ET, but the race isn’t set to start until 12 minutes later at 6:46 p.m. Again, better to tune in early, than late, since the race only lasts two minutes. You don’t want to miss it.
